A business plan does two jobs: it forces you to think clearly, and it communicates that thinking to others. AI can't do the thinking for you, but it's an excellent partner for structure, drafting and pressure-testing. Here's how to use it well.
Step 1 — Get clear on the idea first
Before any drafting, tell the AI your idea in plain language and ask it to interview you: "Ask me ten sharp questions a sceptical investor would ask about this business before I write anything." Answering those questions is where the real value is — it exposes the holes early.
Step 2 — Build the outline
Ask for a standard structure: executive summary, problem, solution, market, competitors, business model, marketing, operations, team and financial summary. Prompt: "Create a business-plan outline for [my business], one line describing what each section should contain for my specific case."
Step 3 — Draft section by section
Work one section at a time and feed the AI your real details. Generic plans read as generic. Prompt: "Draft the market section. Here are my actual customers, price point and location: [details]. Use only what I've given you and mark anything that needs a real number."
Step 4 — Pressure-test the market and competitors
Use a cited-answer research tool to sanity-check market size and list real competitors, then have the AI summarise how you're different. Always verify figures against the original sources — this is exactly where AI invents confident numbers.
Step 5 — Outline the financials (carefully)
AI can structure a simple revenue model and list the cost lines you'll need, but you supply the actual numbers. Prompt: "List the revenue streams and monthly cost categories I should model for this business," then fill in real figures yourself or with your accountant.
Never let AI fabricate your numbers, your traction or your market data. Use it for structure, phrasing and questions you hadn't considered — and treat every statistic it produces as unverified until you've checked the source.
Step 6 — Tighten and adapt
Finish by asking the AI to sharpen the executive summary, then produce a shorter version for a pitch and a one-page summary for quick sharing — same plan, different lengths for different readers.
Our course covers the exact prompting workflows entrepreneurs use for planning, research and marketing — so AI becomes a reliable business partner, not a novelty.

Used in the right order — clarify, outline, draft, verify, quantify, tighten — AI turns the business plan from a dreaded chore into an afternoon's structured thinking. Just remember the plan is only as honest as the numbers and judgement you bring to it.
